COM DEV International Ltd. is a global designer and manufacturer of space hardware. As world leaders in the production of space-qualified passive microwave equipment, specialized electronics and optical subsystems they have over 1,100 employees at facilities in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The company is currently organized into four operating divisions, each run by a President, which are aligned according to the markets they serve :

  • COM DEV International Products (CDIP) is based at the company's headquarters in Cambridge, Ontario. CDIP's primary focus is the design and production of spaceflight hardware for the commercial satcom market. The division designs and produces COM DEV's legacy core products: integrated multiplexers, ancillary microwave components, and electromechanical switches.

  • COM DEV USA (CDU) is located in El Segundo, CA and primarily serves the US military space market, with a focus on complex microwave filtering and specialized electromechanical switches. COM DEV's acquisition of the passive microwave devices product line from L-3 Communications has been integrated into CDU.

  • COM DEV Canada (CDC) is located in Ottawa, Ontario and is primarily focused on the Canadian civil space market; this division specializes in spaceflight subsystems and instruments used in earth observation, space science and remote sensing. Technologies range from rf electronics to optical.

  • COM DEV Europe (CDE) is located in Aylesbury, UK and for over twenty years has focused on European Space Agency activities and technology development. Key technologies have been provided for major European space programs in the communications and remote sensing areas. COM DEV Europe also specializes in Rf and digital space electronics.
ABSL POWER SOLUTIONS LIMITED


ABSL Space Products is a world leader in the research, design, development and delivery of space solutions for customers who cannot afford failure.
ABSL Space Products is a supplier of specialist hardware for satellites and launch vehicles, and space-qualified ground test equipment. The main product lines of the company are battery products and optical instrument products.

Our battery products provide power to satellites and launch vehicles to :

  • Operate on-board instruments and experiments
  • Remain in the correct orbit and orientation
  • Communicate with the Earth

Launch vehicles require a suite of batteries to meet the power demands of a variety of on board equipment. Although launch vehicle missions are relatively short compared to those of spacecraft and only occur once. Many launch suppliers are converting to Lithium-ion battery technology (from primary and older secondary chemistries). It has been found that Lithium-ion can offer comparable or superior energy and power densities with the added benefit of simplifying ground operations. Lithium-ion has far superior cycle and shelf life meaning that launch scrubs and extended pad stays can be endured without labour intensive battery analysis and replacement.

ABSL have provided Launch vehicle batteries required by many different launch vehicle systems. The avionics battery powers the ‘brain’ of the vehicle including navigation and communication equipment. These batteries tend to have relatively low power requirements but good energy density as operation is sustained throughout the entire flight during the operation of each rocket stage. Pyrotechnic and Flight Termination System (FTS) batteries generally have a very low background load throughout the flight with a number of short duration high current pulses to operate ordinance. ABSL has a number of both high power and high energy cells that can be employed for launcher missions.

Thrust Vector Control (TVC) systems provide directional control of rocket engines on launch vehicles. To access cost, safety and weight benefits over heritage (hydraulic) systems, many launch vehicle providers are looking to use fully electric TVC systems powered by high voltage battery systems. Working with high voltage batteries raises safety concerns on the ground as such voltage levels can be lethal if batteries are mishandled. Furthermore, to successfully operate high voltage systems reliably in space, many technical challenges must be overcome. In particular, the risk of corona at the low pressures encountered during launch is key. Indeed, some battery manufacturers and programs have failed during thermal vacuum testing following arcing events invoking catastrophic failure.

 ABSL is unique in the industry in having engineered a number of innovative high voltage battery design characteristics that have allowed the formal space qualification of a 270V Lithium-ion battery. ABSL put the battery through a stringent space qualification program including harsh vibration testing as well as thermal vacuum testing. The battery was able to provide almost 6kW of sustained power with capability to provide peak loads that were much higher (details available on request). Following successful tests of the qualification model in 2006, flight models were built, acceptance tested and delivered to the customer. The 270V TVC battery has since been tested in an end-to-end full system level configuration and was shown to easily handle high in-rush currents encountered during operation. The maiden flight of the vehicle using this TVC battery (as well as a suite of other ABSL Lithium-ion batteries providing other functionality) is due in early 2009.

Instrumentation Product Overview
  • Earth Observation by satellite represents an increasingly significant number of satellites in orbit and this trend is set to continue in the years ahead, as scientists, agencies and regulators look to space for the global monitoring of the components affecting the earth’s climate and their effect.
     
  • Highly accurate instruments are carried on board many of these spacecraft to measure the earth’s temperature in various wavelength bands, covering mm Wave and near-infra-red. The accuracy required for these instruments often relies on highly accurate calibration sources which represent an ideal radiometric source at a well defined temperature.
     
  • ABSL Space Products is now the leading supplier of Calibration Systems providing flight hardware for most of the spacecraft instruments operating in space today, including ATSR, AATSR, MIPAS, MSG-SEVIRI, MSG-GERB and IASI..
     
  • The implementation of a space radiometer experiment often requires pre-launch calibration to be done to enable the functionality of the space hardware to be verified. ABSL has, in the past, also supported ground calibration systems for this purpose.
     
  • Years of experience in the field has enabled ABSL to produce a database of optical black finishes to provide as close as possible to an ideal radiating surface as possible.
     
  • Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) systems are another feature of optical instruments where the constituents of the earth’s atmosphere are being measured or the distribution of features such as vegetation needs to be measured over a wide land surface area. Such imaging instruments can also be used for accurate imaging and ranging of ground topology and distance to a designated target.
     
  • ABSL is actively involved in both imaging and ranging types of LIDAR system, and is able to provide design and development support, production and testing facilities through their in-house optical design team and their facilities. Recent projects have also included the optimisation of the design of a High Resolution Filter (HRF) assembly for space use, leading to a fully qualified space product.
